Australia update 1

Action man Garry coming in from the deep!
The boat to Lady Musgrave Island was an experience, with everyone spewing in the 20 knot winds and 4 metre swells. Garry and I have stomachs of steel tho' and were fine. The rough ride out was worth while. Check out the pictures:

This is on Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world. All the lakes are fresh water and NO CROCS. Hoorah. This is at Lake McKenzie - perfect water, perfect place.

"When I was in 'Nam"

Goodbye Australia! Due to cash flow problems we have been forced out of the country a month earlier than planned. We will be quite pleased to leave to be honest - Oz has been a bit of a washout and a disapointment. Nevermind, we have rested and recuperated in preparation for Southeast Asia.

Check out this picture that Garry took while we were swimming with turtles on the Great Barrier Reef.

We fly to Singapore on Saturday and then onto Hanoi where we meet up with the ninja reflexed, language expert, (and general underground superhero) Andy Castro. We are booked into the Manh Dung guesthouse in the Old City which we are told is very friendly.

We are expecting a bit of a culture shock and a stomach upheaval, but I'm sure we'll get used to it. No malaria pills until Cambodia, so that should make things a little easier.

Will keep you posted ...

Goodbye trusty tent

In 10 days time we will be holding a party to celebrate the burning of the tent. The idea seemed a great one when we left England : take a tent so that we could save money, avoid hostels and have a bit more of an adventure.

It's first test in Tahiti was a disaster. The heat snapped 2 of the poles and we couldn't go in between the hours of 6am - 10pm due to suffocation/dehydration risk. We left the island with the tent smelling like a soccor changing room and looking like an abattoir, due to all the mossies killed.

It was great in New Zealand - the weather was perfect (in the north island) for camping and we did several treks cheaply. The south island was a little too chilly and we only managed 5 nights in it. Our search for a Vaude stockest was fruitless. German rubbish!

Australia has been another disaster as the weather has been rainy and dire. Oh, and another pole snapped. Due to the 3rd pole snap, the canvas has pitched, pooling water on the top of the tent, making it not so waterproof. Thankfully the weather has improved slightly.

We worked out that we have probably spent 75-80 nights in the tent in all. How we haven't killed each other is a mystery and a testimony to the fun we are having. Still, we are burning it next week.

Currently camping in Bundaberg ($14 a night!) - not the centre of the universe, but the last chance to see the reef - and it's sunny! We are going to miss the football tonight as we have to be up at 5.30 for our reef trip.

Sea Mongrels

When you think of the Whitsundays you imagine pristine water, lovely white sand and most of all hot sunny days. Well it has rained everyday since we have been here. We had to abandon the tent on Garry's birthday and can't wait to leave it behind in Brisbane. The water is all churned up due to the heavy rain and wind which is hindering our snorkelling experiences.

It's tough in paradise eh? The sun has come out for a few hours today for our trip to Whitehaven Beach and we have been swimming in the sea which is pretty clear and gorgeous.

Garry's birthday was spent on Hook Island where the staff cooked him a cake. Aaahhh.... We met a guy who is kayaking to New Guinea - 3000km. See his website above. Crazy, but cool.

This is the view from our tent out onto Hook Passage and the beach leading to the fringe coral reef. We took a semi submersible out to the coral gardens where there was the most amzing coloured fish and coral. Each night we fed the fish - hundreds of them came to say hi.

Magnetic North

Here we are on Magnetic Island near Townsville. We have had a week lazing by the pool and sitting on the beach. There have been a few tense tennis matches and Garry has thrashed Sam at table tennis a number of times. The weather is better - lovely blue skies all day - 26 degrees in the day and 16 at night. Not bad for winter eh?

We have decided to travel by train from Cairns to Brisbane - just the same price as the bus and we can walk about and enjoy our journey more. Sam did a classic in Cairns and left her GBP100 fleece under her pillow! Someone (understandably) stole it before we could get it back. $#!#

We have been away from home for 4 months now. Garry's sister Emma has given birth to a healthy baby girl since we've been away and Wayne Rooney was injured, but apart from that I'm not sure what else we have missed. Talking of Wayne Rooney we have organised our trip to the Whitsundays around England's games. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!

Thanks for the emails everyone. Really appreciate getting news from home. Keep them coming.
